Important Information for injured patients, medical physicians, rehabilitation centres and legal firms.

Important Information for injured patients, medical physicians, rehabilitation centres and legal firms.

This information is of extreme importance to the medical physician and rehabilitation team in knowing how to proceed with the treatments and what to avoid in order to not further harm the patient.

An MRI will NOT detect third degree ligament tears / instabilities. A stress test is the only medical diagnostic imaging method available to identify the spinal tears.

OSAC is the ONLY diagnostic image intervention facility in Ontario measuring for 3rd degree ligament tears. The information we assimilate will be provided to all treating practitioners including the patient's family physician.

NOT knowing if there is a 3rd degree tear puts the patient at risk of harm. It also delays the patient's recovery time and creates undue suffering. It is therefore important to perform these special stress tests in order to determine if there is an instability in the spine created by a ligament rupture or not.

Examining the patient (insurance examination) will NOT identify instabilities of the third ligament rupture type. The examiner will not know if there is a tear or not. Tears are also not necessarily painful because they are complete tears (as opposed to partially torn, which is painful when stress tested).

A radiologist will very likely only utilize a visual assessment to view the spinal x-rays. This is not in any form acceptable to any governing body (College for Medical Radiologists). The assessment process takes more than one hour per patient per spinal site to measure (in millimeters or degrees) each segment and determine if there exists a major third degree ligament rupture injury as per the American Medical Association's Guide to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment.
